XyEnterprise Releases Version 1.1 of XPP Web Services Toolkit; New XPP Personal Edition Available

XPP Personal Edition Overview

XPP Personal Edition is designed to meet the needs of users who require the sophisticated composition controls of XPP in a single-user environment. Customers include individual users who have had prior experience with XPP at larger organizations, initial deployments in specialty publishing environments (such as STM journals or reference guides), or remote contributors working for larger organizations.

XPP Personal Edition includes the XyView interactive interface with composition and editing functionality, the CITI module for generating Contents, Indices, Tables, and Illustrations, and a choice of two Hyphenation and Justification dictionaries from the over 30 languages supported by XPP. Other optional components (including MathML, XyDiff, EDGAR, and other specialized items) are also available.

What is XPP Personal Edition?

XPP Personal Edition is a single user, interactive only license of the XPP publishing engine. It contains a XyView license with access to interactive composition functions, a CITI license for generation of TOC's and indexes and an H&J Language license (in addition to the native language that is included).

What is the profile of a single user of XPP?

A user that needs the sophisticated composition controls for special jobs but does not have volumes that would require batch functionality. Candidates may include individual outsource users that have prior experience with XPP at larger organizations, initial deployments in specialty publishing environments (such as STM journals or reference guides), or remote contributors for larger organizations.

What functions are available in XPP Personal Edition?

All critical activities and composition functions are available in XPP Personal Edition. In the single user XPP environment, the XyView is used as an interactive desktop. Thus users can perform each of the following functions:

Jobs can include graphics and users can generate continued page numbering across divisions. The composition capabilities for formatting are completely available. However, as this is a desktop license, users must manually compose divisions in the desired order using the Xyview as automation of this function is a server process not available in this desktop license. Additionally, error messages that are generated when server functions are called are appropriate and helpful. Users also have access to the Pathfinder and can select jobs and run most interactive features from this interface as well.

What functions are not available in XPP Personal Edition?

While all composition functionality is available in this software package, certain functions typically run in a batch/server environment are not. Specifically, users will not have background processing available to them. This means they cannot place files in watched directories for automatic import to XPP. XPP Personal Users cannot place jobs in background queues for composition or printing. These functions are only available via the desktop interface. Users cannot initiate composition or printing from a script, command line or any utility (such as Divison Processing or Job Processing). It is possible for a user to run useful job processing functions (such as spell-check), but not compose in a scripted batch manner.
