License File Requests and Transfers
Access to SDL product features is controlled through the use of FlexLM License File Manager Software. The license file allows you to use the SDL software options and features you have purchased. You must install a new license file on your server or stand-alone system if you are:
- Installing new software for the first time.
- Upgrading from an earlier release of the software.
- Adding options (tokens) to your software.
- Transferring your software from one server to another.
- Re-configuring options (tokens).
- Changing the configuration of your node-locked or networked licensing.

License File Request Information
In order to process any type of license request, we will need some information when you contact us. Based on the information you provide, we will then work to process your request. The following is the information we will need and an overview of the license file process.
Contact Information
Please provide us with your company name and details how we can contact you for questions. License files are typically delivered by e-mail to the person who made the request. Please let us know if you need the license file to also be sent to others in your organisation.
License Request Type
Once we have the information necessary to process your request we will transfer your request to the appropriate account representative and process it depending on the type of request. The following are the typical types of license requests.
New License Request
If you are installing new software for the first time, upgrading from an earlier release of the software, performing a platform migration from one operating system to another or adding options (tokens) to your software.
License Transfer Request
If you are transferring your software from one server to another, re-configuring options (tokens), changing the configuration of your node-locked or networked licensing or any other type of license re-configuration we will require a signed “License Transfer Form”. If you have provided us the information via e-mail or the web site, we can often fill out the form for you before sending it.
Note: There is an administration fee for License Transfer Requests. If a transfer is done at the same time as an upgrade or purchase of new licenses, this fee will be waived. There is re-licensing fee for a platform migration from one operating system to another.
Current Product Configuration
In order for Portalyx and SDL to provide a license file we will need the Product Name, Version, and Patches and the Server Operating System and Version of your current configuration. The Product Name, Version, and Patch can be found in the Help, About menu of your SDL product. If you are installing new software for the first time the current product configuration information in not applicable.
Requested Product Configuration
For all types of license file requests, we will need the Product Name, Version, and Patches and the Server Operating System and Version of your new requested product configuration. If the requested product version and patch are not specified, the current product version will be used.
License Site Code
The Site Code is a nine-digit number assigned to the server by the SDL Sales Administration Department. This is usually your five-digit customer code, followed by another four digits to differentiate between multiple servers, if any. Example: 12345-0101. You will find this in an existing license file.
Note: If you are installing new software for the first time SDL will assign the site code while processing your request.
License Host Name and Host ID (MAC Address)
The Host Name is the name you have given to your server. The Host ID is a hardwired code that is usually derived from the server’s network card. This is different from the network’s IP address.
Note: For more information about finding the server’s Host Name and Host ID, please refer to the SDL Installation manual. For instructions on installing the delivered license file, please refer to the Installation Manual for either XPP or Contenta
License Request Description
Please provide a detailed description about what you are trying to accomplish in advance. A discussion may also be needed to determine your requirements for the new requested configuration.
